Nitrous oxide is available for children and adults when appropriate. It does not require an insurance eligibility check or authorization and is paid for out of pocket at the time of your visit.
What nitrous oxide does
Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a mask that rests over the nose. It is intended to reduce anxiety and increase comfort, not to make you unconscious. You remain able to breathe on your own, hear the team, and respond to directions.
The effect begins quickly and is adjusted during the appointment. Some people notice light-headedness, warmth, tingling, or a feeling of heaviness. The effects usually wear off soon after the mask is removed and oxygen is administered.
Why it may be considered
- The level can be adjusted during treatment
- Onset and recovery are generally rapid
- It may reduce anxiety and help manage a strong gag reflex
- The patient remains conscious and communicative
Is nitrous oxide right for everyone?
No comfort option is appropriate for every patient. Tell the office about your complete medical history, pregnancy, breathing or sinus conditions, vitamin B12 concerns, recent illness, medications, and any previous sedation reaction. Dr. Moore will determine whether nitrous oxide is appropriate for the planned visit or whether another approach should be discussed.
